In an effort to encourage rejuvenation in the chess scene we are running a trial fee and prize structure change for juniors under 16 on September 1st 2010.
After all it's the mums and dads who usually pay the fee and I hope my idea will lower the barriers to juniors getting started, or continuing promising careers in chess.
Simply put - juniors pay half price and if successful, receive half the adult prize money.
In the event of a tie involving adults and juniors, the adult prize fund is divided by the number of winners (i.e. number of juniors plus number of adults) and the juniors get half of the value so created. Adults receive the full value of course.
In the 2009congress we had 13 juniors of which 6 chose the half price option.
