Donations and Sponsorship Magnificent chess! Chess is a magnificent, mind stretching past-time but more needs to be done to provide the conditions under which it will blossom and become a natural part of the fabric of society, rather than the minority interest which it is today. Club memberships surged when Masterclass appeared on TV but sadly, in the UK, chess waxed and waned almost into oblivion as a spectator sport which could attract revenue streams, because of the non-proliferation of chess skills in society. But sponsorship is not just about money, it is about schools sponsoring chess teaching time, extra curricular or otherwise; it is about chess club / school partnerships; it is about developing advertising revenue. It is about grand masters donating time for appearances in colleges and schools to develop a self sustaining hero worship. It is about inspiring the upwardly mobile, and perhaps the downwardly mobile like me, to take up chess as a major interest rivalling bridge, which has a huge but equally well hidden and silent following. Should you, as a school headmaster or college principal, wish to develop your pupils' problem solving and mental agilty skills by introducing chess into their diet, please do not hesitate to contact us, or you local chess association or chess club for real help and real advice on how to get started and how to sustain their interest in chess.
